Complement
A complement is the part of a
Sentence that comes after the VERB and is needed to make the sentence
complete. The following are the most important types of complement used in
English.
Example : “John is a chicken”
The noun phrase “a chicken” tells
us something about the subject (John). This is another example of a
subject complement.
In the examples above, the
shaded complements complement either a subject or an object; i.e. they sit
alongside either a subject or an object to complete it. So, as you'd expect, a
complement that completes a subject is called a subject complement, and one
that completes an object is called an object complement. That seems pretty
straightforward.
·
SUBJECT COMPLEMENT
Eg: He’s a surveyor. (The
Subject is completed by the complement to the verb. This is a Copula Verb.
·
OBJECT COMPLEMEN
Eg: She sent him the fax.
(The setence is completed by telling us what she sent to him.)
·
ADJECTIVAL COMPLEMENT
Eg: They’ll be happy. (The
sentence is completed by the Adjective; this could be extended further, they’ll
be happy to see us, etc..)
·
PREPOSITIONAL
COMPLEMEN
Eg: They talked about what
needed doing. (The setence is completed by the Phrase linked tothe verb by the
Preposition.)
